Anxiety Q & A

What does anxiety feel like?

Anxiety is the uneasy feeling you get before a big test or job interview: fear, worry, and/or nervousness. It can cause physical symptoms like shaking and sweating.

These feelings are your body’s stress response and help you get through the stressful situation. Once it’s behind you, your feelings of fear, dread, and worry go away.

But you could have an anxiety disorder if you have overwhelming anxiety or anxiety that affects your ability to function normally, and it never seems to go away.

I worry so much I get headaches. Do I have an anxiety disorder?

Anxiety that causes physical symptoms like headaches and stomach aches can indicate an anxiety disorder. Many anxiety disorders have different triggers and symptoms.

Types of anxiety disorders include:

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

People with GAD experience overwhelming fear, worry, and/or dread about everyday things like health, finances, and relationships. The anxiety is so severe that it makes concentrating difficult and can cause physical symptoms like headaches.

Panic disorder

People with panic disorder experience frequent, unexpected panic attacks. Panic attacks cause intense feelings of terror that trigger physical symptoms like sweating, shaking, and shortness of breath.

Social anxiety disorder

Social anxiety disorder is an extreme fear of social situations brought on by overwhelming worries of self-humiliation.

Phobias

Phobias are intense fear of specific places, events, or objects, like fear of needles or fear of heights.

What is the difference between anxiety and depression?

Depression and anxiety disorders are two separate mental health disorders. While it’s not uncommon to experience both at the same time, they each need their own treatment.

Under specific circumstances, depression is a severe mood disorder that causes ongoing sadness and disinterest in activities that bring joy.

Rachel provides mental health services for depression and anxiety for people 8 and older.
